A Letter In The Lost Wallet

As I walked home one freezing day, I stumbled on a wallet someone had lost in the street. I picked it up and looked inside to find some identification so
I could call the owner. But the wallet contained only three dollars and a
crumpled letter that looked as if it had been in there for years.

The envelope was worn and the only thing that was legible on it was the
return address. I started to open the letter, hoping to find some clue. Then
I saw the dateline--1924. The letter had been written almost sixty years ago.

It was written in a beautiful feminine handwriting on powder blue
stationery with a little flower in the left-hand corner. It was a "Dear John"
letter that told the recipient, whose name appeared to be Michael, that the
writer could not see him any more because her mother forbade it. Even so, she
wrote that she would always love him.

It was signed, Hannah.

It was a beautiful letter, but there was no way except for the name
Michael, that the owner could be identified. Maybe if I called information,
the operator could find a phone listing for the address on the envelope.

"Operator," I began, "this is an unusual request. I'm trying to find the
owner of a wallet that I found. Is there anyway you can tell me if there is a
phone number for an address that was on an envelope in the wallet?"

She suggested I speak with her supervisor, who hesitated for a moment then said, "Well, there is a phone listing at that address, but I can't give you
the number." She said, as a courtesy, she would call that number, explain my
story and would ask them if they wanted her to connect me. I waited a few
minutes and then she was back on the line. "I have a party who will speak
with you."

I asked the woman on the other end of the line if she knew anyone by the
name of Hannah. She gasped, "Oh! We bought this house from a family who had a daughter named Hannah. But that was 30 years ago!"

"Would you know where that family could be located now?" I asked.

"I remember that Hannah had to place her mother in a nursing home some
years ago," the woman said. "Maybe if you got in touch with them they might be able to track down the daughter."

She gave me the name of the nursing home and I called the number. They told me the old lady had passed away some years ago but they did have a phone number for where they thought the daughter might be living.

I thanked them and phoned. The woman who answered explained that Hannah herself was now living in a nursing home.

This whole thing was stupid, I thought to myself. Why was I making such a
big deal over finding the owner of a wallet that had only three dollars and a
letter that was almost 60 years old?

Nevertheless, I called the nursing home in which Hannah was supposed to be living and the man who answered the phone told me, "Yes, Hannah is staying with us. "

Even though it was already 10 p.m., I asked if I could come by to see her.
"Well," he said hesitatingly, "if you want to take a chance, she might be in
the day room watching television."

I thanked him and drove over to the nursing home. The night nurse and a
guard greeted me at the door. We went up to the third floor of the large
building. In the day room, the nurse introduced me to Hannah.

She was a sweet, silver-haired old timer with a warm smile and a twinkle in
her eye.

I told her about finding the wallet and showed her the letter. The second
she saw the powder blue envelope with that little flower on the left, she took
a deep breath and said, "Young man, this letter was the last contact I ever
had with Michael."

She looked away for a moment deep in thought and then said Softly, "I loved
him very much. But I was only 16 at the time and my mother felt I was too
young. Oh, he was so handsome. He looked like Sean Connery, the actor."

"Yes," she continued. "Michael Goldstein was a wonderful person. If you
should find him, tell him I think of him often. And," she hesitated for a
moment, almost biting her lip, "tell him I still love him. You know," she said
smiling as tears began to well up in her eyes, "I never did marry. I guess no
one ever matched up to Michael..."

I thanked Hannah and said goodbye. I took the elevator to the first floor
and as I stood by the door, the guard there asked, "Was the old lady able to
help you?"

I told him she had given me a lead. "At least I have a last name. But I
think I'll let it go for a while. I spent almost the whole day trying to find
the owner of this wallet."

I had taken out the wallet, which was a simple brown leather case with red
lacing on the side. When the guard saw it, he said, "Hey, wait a minute!
That's Mr. Goldstein's wallet. I'd know it anywhere with that bright red
lacing. He's always losing that wallet. I must have found it in the halls at
least three times."

"Who's Mr. Goldstein?" I asked as my hand began to shake.

"He's one of the old timers on the 8th floor. That's Mike Goldstein's
wallet for sure. He must have lost it on one of his walks."

I thanked the guard and quickly ran back to the nurse's office. I told her
what the guard had said. We went back to the elevator and got on. I prayed
that Mr. Goldstein would be up.

On the eighth floor, the floor nurse said, "I think he's still in the day
room. He likes to read at night. He's a darling old man."

We went to the only room that had any lights on and there was a man reading a book. The nurse went over to him and asked if he had lost his wallet. Mr. Goldstein looked up with surprise, put his hand in his back pocket and said, "Oh, it is missing!"

"This kind gentleman found a wallet and we wondered if it could be yours?"

I handed Mr. Goldstein the wallet and the second he saw it, he smiled with
relief and said, "Yes, that's it! It must have dropped out of my pocket this
afternoon. I want to give you a reward."

"No, thank you," I said. "But I have to tell you something. I read the
letter in the hope of finding out who owned the wallet."

The smile on his face suddenly disappeared. "You read that letter?"

"Not only did I read it, I think I know where Hannah is."

He suddenly grew pale. "Hannah? You know where she is? How is she? Is she still as pretty as she was? Please, please tell me," he begged.

"She's fine...just as pretty as when you knew her." I said softly.

The old man smiled with anticipation and asked, "Could you tell me where
she is? I want to call her tomorrow." He grabbed my hand and said, "You know something, mister, I was so in love with that girl that when that letter came, my life literally ended. I never married. I guess I've always loved her. "

"Mr. Goldstein," I said, "Come with me."

We took the elevator down to the third floor. The hallways were darkened
and only one or two little night-lights lit our way to the day room where
Hannah was sitting alone watching the television. The nurse walked over to
her.

"Hannah," she said softly, pointing to Michael, who was waiting with me in
the doorway. "Do you know this man?"

She adjusted her glasses, looked for a moment, but didn't say a word.
Michael said softly, almost in a whisper, "Hannah, it's Michael. Do you
remember me?"

She gasped, "Michael! I don't believe it! Michael! It's you! My Michael!"
He walked slowly towards her and they embraced. The nurse and I left with
tears streaming down our faces.

"See," I said. "See how the Good Lord works! If it's meant to be, it will
be."

About three weeks later I got a call at my office from the nursing home.
"Can you break away on Sunday to attend a wedding? Michael and Hannah are going to tie the knot!"

It was a beautiful wedding with all the people at the nursing home dressed
up to join in the celebration. Hannah wore a light beige dress and looked
beautiful. Michael wore a dark blue suit and stood tall. They made me their
best man.

The hospital gave them their own room and if you ever wanted to see a
76-year-old bride and a 79-year-old groom acting like two teenagers, you had
to see this couple.

A perfect ending for a love affair that had lasted nearly 60 years.

Midnight Sun

Hiya there! How was your Sunday so far? I took a nap just now and when I woke up, my mind suddenly tells me to Google for Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 countdown timer! So, there you go, a countdown timer for the no. 1 novel turned movie ever. (You can see it at the top left column of my blog).

I was reading those comments at the website where I found this widget when I saw one comment about Midnight Sun. I heard about it before and knew that Midnight Sun is Twilight from Edward's point of view but did not pay any attention to it.

Midnight Sun is actually a Twilight story too but from Edward's perspective.

"As some of you may have heard, my partial draft of Midnight Sun was illegally posted on the Internet and has since been virally distributed without my knowledge or permission or the knowledge or permission of my publisher." - Stephenie Meyer

However, she agreed to just let it be and now you can read Chapter 1 here and also her partial draft here.

Thank you Stephenie Meyer. I love your work and your mother is sure one lucky mother as she is the first person who reads your Midnight Sun and told you to go for it! :D

You can know more about Midnight Sun at Stephenie Meyer's website here.

P/S: I also found a few Twihard fans' comments stating that it will DEFINITELY be 'no Twilight, no life' for them after this final movie for the Twilight Saga. LOL

Emo betul kan. Hehehe. Relax la bah.

Erra Fazira enggan komen kenyataan suami

Erra Fazira

KUALA LUMPUR: “Saya enggan memberi sebarang komen mengenai rumah tangga kerana ia terlalu peribadi.

Bagaimanapun, katanya, beliau terpaksa membuat ulasan selepas melihat isu rumah tangganya makin hebat diperkatakan.

Semakan Status Pendaftaran SPA8

This post will show you how to know what's going on with your job application in SPA8 Portal. As you can see they have improved their website with those application process and now we can see their automatic updates as they review our application day by day.

A random conversation with a friend of mine once upon a time:

Friend: Kau suda apply SPA ka?
Me: Sudah. Baru jg yang bulan lalu. Lama tu kan mau tunggu. Biasalah.
Friend: Ya. Memang lama tu mau tunggu.
Me: Kenapa lama tu ah?
Friend: Ramai bah orang yang apply tu. Ikut queue tu. Siapa duluan apply, dia duluan kena tgk application dia.
Me: Ya kah?
Friend: Ya. Lagipun ikut quota jg tu brp rmai dorg mau employ.
Me: Haiz. Ada yang sa dengar dapat kerja sudah dr SPA dorg apply pakai result SPM ni.
Friend: Apply pakai result Diploma pun ramai tu suda kena panggil exam & interview semua.
Me: Jadi yang Degree ni xda pun kena tengok kan. Apa macam oh.
Friend: Ikut nasib bah tu.
Me: Mau apply balik la ni pakai SPM.
Friend: Ish! Jangannnnn! Ko baru jg apply kan ko bilang?
Me: Ai? Ya la. Napa pula x buli?
Friend: Terpaksa ko tunggu lamaaaaaa lagi mai tu turn ko. Bagus2 suda 1 bln application ko.
Me: Oh. Begitu ka pula.
Friend: Ya bah. Ko tunggu dulu mau dekat2 1 thn suda tu application, baru ko apply balik. Sayang ja nti.
Me: Bah sa tunggu la lepas 6 bln br sa apply balik.

Have you ever been in that situation? Have you ever heard about it before? Why is it like that? It's because we don't even know what happen next after submitting our application. We just wait and wait until the money fall down from the sky or wait until the moon fall into our lap. Wait, what?

Worry no more as from now on we can check our application status with just a click away! Come and I will show you how. Paling senang di dunia ni sa pun x tau kenapa sa mau buat tutorial untuk benda ni. Kalau pandai ber-Facebook atau nama glamour ber-FB, itu bukan alasan kenapa kamu x pandai semak status pendaftaran kamurang.

First of all, sila ke laman sesawang SPA8 iaitu www.spa.gov.my. Perrrgghhhh. Laman sesawang? Website bah. LOL

The SPA Portal will look like this:

Secondly, please scroll down until you find the 'Semakan Status Pendaftaran' under 'Semakan Online' tab and click on it.

Thirdly, key in your MyID (which is you IC No.) and your Kata Laluan/ Password. After that, click 'Log Masuk'. Mau jg bgtau kan. Bahahahaha :D

At the top left corner will be the link to your 'Semakan Status Permohonan'. Click it and wait for a moment.

Voila! Your application status is right in front of you!

As for me, I was quite unsatisfied with their status saying 'Tidak melepasi syarat semasa yang ditetapkan oleh Suruhanjaya'. So what I did was I wrote them a letter demanding explanation on why I didn't make the cut by referring to the No. Urusan. Then, 5 days later I have received a reply from them stating their explanation. You may also email them too for a prompt reply. I am sure they will get back to you ASAP.

Moreover, you can see which department/ministry is seeking for employee and what specialization are they looking for.

For example: Agroteknologi - Jabatan Perikanan Malaysia

Means Jabatan Perikanan Malaysia seeking for job applicants which specializes in Agroteknologi.

A tip from me, if any government agencies calls you for an examination or a job interview, please go for it. Why not? Please don't just simply reject it. Belum tentu ko pigi exam sama interbiu ko kena accept kerja mah. Org lain lagi yang tidak kena telefon suru datang interview, cukup untung suda ko kena panggil interview. Pigi saja, inda jg rugi tu. Diterima untuk bekerja atau tidak, itu belakang kira. Setuju atau tidak?

Especially a job opportunity with the government which is hard to get into. It is not easy to find a decent job nowadays which pays good money. Tidak kira la government atau private.

Another one last tip from me, don't give up trying and always hope for the best!

Good luck everybody!

P/S: At least skrg senang hati sikit juga kan yang rupanya kena tingu jg tu application kita d SPA. Hahaha :D

Btw, sa 2 kali suda kena panggil by SPA.

1. Jurubahasa, apply pakai SPM. Tahun 2007 or 2008. Kena panggil interview tapi sa x pigi sbb time tu sa tngh study di UMS.
2. Pegawai Kastam, apply pakai Degree. Tahun 2012. Kena panggil exam tapi gagal. Wahahaha :D

A Letter from a Shelter Manager

A Letter from a Shelter Manager - anonymous in North Carolina

I think our society needs a huge "Wake-up" call. As a shelter manager, I am going to share a little insight with you all...a view from the inside if you will.

First off, all of you breeders/sellers should be made to work in the "back" of an animal shelter for just one day. Maybe if you saw the life drain from a few sad, lost, confused eyes, you would change your mind about breeding and selling to people you don't even know.

That puppy you just sold will most likely end up in my shelter when it's not a cute little puppy anymore. So how would you feel if you knew that there's about a 90% chance that dog will never walk out of the shelter it is going to be dumped at? Purebred or not! About 50% of all of the dogs that are "owner surrenders" or "strays", that come into my shelter are purebred dogs.

The most common excuses I hear are;

1. "We are moving and we can't take our dog (or cat)." Really? Where are you moving too that doesn't allow pets?

Or they say

2. "The dog got bigger than we thought it would". How big did you think a German Shepherd would get?

3. "We don't have time for her". Really? I work a 10-12 hour day and still have time for my 6 dogs!

4. "She's tearing up our yard". How about making her a part of your family?

5. They always tell me "We just don't want to have to stress about finding a place for her we know she'll get adopted, she's a good dog".

Odds are your pet won't get adopted & how stressful do you think being in a shelter is? Well, let me tell you, your pet has 72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop it off. Sometimes a little longer if the shelter isn't full and your dog manages to stay completely healthy. If it sniffles, it dies.

Your pet will be confined to a small run/kennel in a room with about 25 other barking or crying animals.

It will have to relieve itself where it eats and sleeps. It will be depressed and it will cry constantly for the family that abandoned it. If your pet is lucky, I will have enough volunteers in that day to take him/her for a walk. If I don't, your pet won't get any attention besides having a bowl of food slid under the kennel door and the waste sprayed out of its pen with a high-powered hose.

If your dog is big, black or any of the "Bully" breeds (pit bull, rottie, mastiff, etc) it was pretty much dead when you walked it through the front door.

Those dogs just don't get adopted. It doesn't matter how 'sweet' or 'well behaved' they are.

If your dog doesn't get adopted within its 72 hours and the shelter is full, it will be destroyed. If the shelter isn't full and your dog is good enough, and of a desirable enough breed it may get a stay of execution, but not for long . Most dogs get very kennel protective after about a week and are destroyed for showing aggression. Even the sweetest dogs will turn in this environment. If your pet makes it over all of those hurdles chances are it will get kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection and will be destroyed because shelters just don't have the funds to pay for even a $100 treatment.

Here's a little euthanasia 101 for those of you that have never witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being "put-down".

First, your pet will be taken from its kennel on a leash. They always look like they think they are going for a walk happy, wagging their tails. Until they get to "The Room", every one of them freaks out and puts on the brakes when we get to the door. It must smell like death or they can feel the sad souls that are left in there, it's strange, but it happens with every one of them. Your dog or cat will be restrained, held down by 1 or 2 vet techs depending on the size and how freaked out they are. Then a euthanasia tech or a vet will start the process. They will find a vein in the front leg and inject a lethal dose of the "pink stuff". Hopefully your pet doesn't panic from being restrained and jerk. I've seen the needles tear out of a leg and been covered with the resulting blood and been deafened by the yelps and screams. They all don't just "go to sleep", sometimes they spasm for a while, gasp for air and defecate on themselves.

When it all ends, your pets corpse will be stacked like firewood in a large freezer in the back with all of the other animals that were killed waiting to be picked up like garbage. What happens next? Cremated? Taken to the dump? Rendered into pet food? You'll never know and it probably won't even cross your mind. It was just an animal and you can always buy another one, right?

I hope that those of you that have read this are bawling your eyes out and can't get the pictures out of your head I deal with everyday on the way home from work.

I hate my job, I hate that it exists & I hate that it will always be there unless you people make some changes and realize that the lives you are affecting go much farther than the pets you dump at a shelter.

Between 9 and 11 MILLION animals die every year in shelters and only you can stop it. I do my best to save every life I can but rescues are always full, and there are more animals coming in everyday than there are homes.

My point to all of this DON'T BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER PETS DIE!

Hate me if you want to. The truth hurts and reality is what it is. I just hope I maybe changed one persons mind about breeding their dog, taking their loving pet to a shelter, or buying a dog. I hope that someone will walk into my shelter and say "I saw this and it made me want to adopt". THAT WOULD MAKE IT WORTH IT.

How to find a true No Kill shelter or rescue group

http://www.examiner.com/dog-rescue-in-national/how-to-find-a-true-no-kill-shelter-or-rescue-group

-----

I saw this one from Facebook. It really touches me and I hope it touches all of you too.

In Sabah, you can adopt dogs or cats at SPCA Kota Kinabalu.

They are located at Kg. Kibabaig, Penampang (Previously Borneo Kennel - Dogs Training Centre).

They are open from Monday to Sunday (10am - 5pm). Sunday and public holiday by appointment only. You may call 013-8659100 for appointments.

For dogs and puppies for adoption, please call 016-8346674. For puppy, adoption fee is RM50. For adult dog, RM100 :) Kira murah sudah tu tau. Kalau kamu pigi beli sana Gaya Street brp? Ada la kali RM500 ke atas kan.

Actually it is my dream to set up my own animal shelter. Kesian bah tingu dorg. Huhu. One day I will achieve that dream. Amen.

Last but not least, Don't shop, ADOPT!

P/S: Sorry for the highlighted words. I just want to really have your full attention on this matter. Thank you :)

Olivia Culpo: Miss USA 2012

Olivia Culpo of Rhode Island has been crowned Miss USA 2012 beating out a number of beautiful and talented Latinas along the way, including Miss Mississippi Myverick Garcia, Miss Colorado Marybel Gonzalez, Miss New York USA Johanna Sambucini.

Culpo is a cellist who describes herself as a nerd and aspires to be more like Hollywood icon Audrey Hepburn. Culpo said after winning her crown Sunday night that she plans to go to Tiffany & Co. in New York and recreate Hepburn's iconic opening scene from "Breakfast at Tiffany's."

Culpo, a Boston University sophomore, will take a year off from her studies to tackle her duties as Miss USA and represent the nation in the 61st Miss Universe contest in December. The 20-year-old said she wished she could have shared her crown with her 50 competitors during the pageant at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

Culpo strutted across the stage in a lilac bikini, then donned a flowing fuchsia gown with sparkly trim around her waist and decolletage. After making it to the final five, Culpo voiced her support for transgender beauty queens during the make-or-break interview round.

"Would you feel it would be fair that a transgender woman wins the Miss USA title over a natural-born woman?" asked celebrity judge Rob Kardashian. The question came from a pageant follower on Twitter, a first for the competition.

Culpo didn't hesitate before embracing the Miss Universe Organization's recent decision to admit transgender contestants.

"I do think that that would be fair, but I can understand that people would be a little apprehensive to take that road because there is a tradition of natural-born women, but today where there are so many surgeries and so many people out there who have a need to change for a happier life, I do accept that because I believe it's a free country," Culpo said.

Culpo said after the pageant that she wasn't put off by the question when she heard it.

"This is a free country and to each their own," she said.

Culpo said she was short and chubby as a girl, but blossomed after a growth spurt. She spent her summers at band camp after learning to play the cello in second grade. Her parents are also musicians, and her love for music saw her perform at Symphony Hall in Boston and Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Culpo is a 2010 graduate of St. Mary Academy Bay View, an all-girls Catholic school in Riverside, where she was a member of the National Honor Society. She said she comes from a big, Italian family and speaks some Italian. On her Twitter account, she describes herself as a nerd and model.

"I was just so surprised, so shocked, so honored to be there," she said of her win.

Rounding out the top five contestants were first runner-up Nana Meriwether of Maryland, second runner-up Audrey Bolte of Ohio, third runner-up Jade Kelsall of Nevada and fourth runner-up Jasmyn Wilkins of Georgia. As Meriwether and Culpo held hands waiting for the winner to be announced, Culpo bit her lip and cringed with anticipation.

Culpo demonstrated an outgoing personality throughout the competition, blowing a kiss and shimmying across the stage during the opening number. She cited Hepburn as her source of inspiration, noting her many years of volunteer work.

"She was beautiful on the outside but also beautiful on the inside," said Culpo, who sang the chorus of "Funny Face" from her favorite movie of the same name after her win.

Miss Iowa USA Rebecca Hodge was named Miss Congeniality, and Miss Oregon USA Alaina Bergsma was named the most photogenic. They both won $1,000, but didn't make the top 16.

The pageant had three competitions: swimsuit, evening gowns and interview question. The contestants were whittled to 16 after the show's opening fashion show number. The contestants were later narrowed down to a field of 10 and then five.

Pop band Cobra Starship performed as the beauty queens modeled their string bikinis. Singer Akon danced with the top five during the evening gown competition.

Culpo had one of the more modest dresses of the contest, with many of the beauty queens wearing revealing gowns with bare backs, high slits and sheer fabric. In contrast, Culpo's flowing gown covered her legs and lower back while revealing some cleavage.

The judge's panel included Chef Cat Cora, TV personality Arsenio Hall and singer Joe Jonas. Andy Cohen and Giuliana Rancic stepped in to host. Miss USA 2011 Alyssa Campanella of California crowned Culpo her successor at the end of the night.

The first-ever transgender contestant to compete in the Miss Universe Canada pageant made it to the penultimate round before losing her bid to win the title last month. She was initially denied entry to Canada's pageant because she was not born female. Donald Trump, who runs the Miss Universe Organization, subsequently overruled that decision.

Miss Universe publicity director Brenda Mendoza has said transgender competitors are now welcome at all of its pageants around the world.

The competition is not affiliated with the Miss America pageant.
